Saw an article in the DNA today about an Assistant HR manager of Deutsche Bank, Gautam Deepak Baan, who was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai crime branch for allegedly defrauding the bank of Rs. 1.63 crores. A 28 year old guy, he drew a salary of Rs.10 lakh a year and enjoyed living it up, with two cars (including a Skoda) and two flats in Mumbai.

He used to handle the suspense account of the bank, where money was transferred before being credited to employees’ salary accounts. Apparently, when employees left Deutsche Bank, their salary accounts were not closed and Baan used to transfer the money from the suspense account to these salary accounts and then to his own account. The fraud was unearthed when he tried to close the account of an employee who had quit a year ago, and the bank got suspicious since the closure request did not come from the employee.

If these facts are indeed correct, the whole situation is so ludicrous that it’s not even funny.

In a complete reversal of it’s earlier decision to terminate services of almost 1,900 employees, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal announced a total reinstatement of the sacked employees, asking them all to report to work on Friday morning.Even as he distanced himself personally from the decision to sack them in the first place, saying his management team was only following his brief to rationalise costs, it is unthinkable that the head of an organisation can remain blissfully unaware / uninformed about firing so many employees at one go.

The sacked employees were also overjoyed with the announcement, saying “We are all extremely pleased and thankful. We had always wanted to work with Naresh Goyal. We apologize if we hurt his sentiments during the protests,” .

So sweeeeeeet. And all’s well that ends well. Bullshit !

TCS has just inked a contract with the Ministry of External Affairs to manage issue of passports. It has also acquired Citigroup Global Services in an all cash deal for $505 million, adding to it’s headcount by around 12,500 Citi employees.

On the HR front, however, there has been a lot of action, which began with firing 20 employees with faked resumes, followed by the company’s decision to postpone promotions. And now, what employees believe to be the unkindest cut of all - reduction in variable pay.

Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) has terminated services of almost 20 employees at its Kolkata centre after a background check revealed these employees had faked their resumes.

This is not all that surprising as there have been several such instances recently, not just in India but even abroad. Secondly, this is not restricted to the junior-middle level management, and even top managment executives have been guilty of fudging facts on their resumes.
